Activities for Kids: Homemade moon sand

As you might know, we love homemade kids crafts! Check out all of the crafts we have posted here.  I really love that crafts keep the kids attention, and spark their minds and imagination.  While we are making a craft we always hypothesize about how it will turn out, the kids really enjoy trying to figure out what the craft will be like before they start it, they also love thinking of other ways to use the craft after it is done.  For example, moon sand is great to shape and build with but also fun to draw in with their fingers.  Check out how to make homemade moon sand.

What you will need:

  • Play Sand {4 cups} found at craft stores
  • Corn Starch {2 cups}
  • Food Coloring
  • Glitter {optional} **Bigger pieces of glitter work best
  • Measuring cup
  • Water

How to make Moon Sand

  1. Mix the sand {4 cups} and cornstarch {2 cups} completely in a large bowl.
  2. Mix several drops of food coloring with 1 cup of water.
  3. Mix the water slowly with the sand/starch mixture while stirring or mixing with your hands
  4. Continue to mix the mixture until all mixed together.
  5. Add glitter {as much or as little as you want}
  6. Enjoy!

Hope you have as much fun with the moon sand as we did! Let us know in the comments how yours turned out! Or send us your photos on our Facebook page!
