Standard Amniocentesis is usually administered between Week 18-Week 22 for women who are 35 years age or older at time the time of delivery or is advanced risk of genetic abnormalities.
Amniocentesis is performed by an ultrasound evaluation to assess fetal development, find the placenta, determine fetus age, and located a pocket of amniotic fluid. A site on the mother’s abdomen is chosen and with ultrasound guidance a needle is inserted through the mothers abdomen, into the uterus and a small amount of amitotic fluid is removed to sent off for testing.
The test can be uncomfortable and women can experience cramping after.
Results take up to 10 days.
